Portable audio devices are often marketed as “waterproof.” But what does that actually mean?
Breaking Down IP Ratings
IP stands for Ingress Protection.
The rating format is IPXY:
-
X = protection against solids (dust)
-
Y = protection against liquids (water)
IP67 means:
-
6: Fully dust-tight
-
7: Protected against temporary immersion in water (up to 1 meter for 30 minutes)
It does not mean permanent underwater use.
The Engineering Challenge
Speakers need air movement to function. Drivers vibrate. Sound waves exit through openings.
Waterproofing requires balancing:
- Acoustic transparency
- Structural sealing
- Pressure equalization
- Electrical protection
To achieve IP67, manufacturers use:
- Sealed internal gaskets
- Waterproof membranes over acoustic ports
- Reinforced housing materials
Portable models like BUGANi Brief TT, built with IP67-rated protection, are designed for real-world exposure to rain, dust, and outdoor environments.

Durability in audio is not about coating the surface. It is about structural engineering.
